The Enchanted Forest, by Sparrow, is a short fable that will feed a child’s imagination and also teach him or her a lesson about facing fears. King George, Queen Anne, and Princess Maryanne live in Thornberry Kingdom where the enchanted forest is found. King George is afraid of the enchanted forest and he has ordered his people to avoid it, although he has never been there and does not know exactly what it is like. One day, Queen Anne decides to invite her friends and their daughters to join her and the princess for a tea party in the enchanted forest as she is curious about the place. The women and girls all go there for a tea party; however they do not return home that evening. King George is faced with a dilemma and must decide if he can face his fear.

Sparrow does a good job with creating a fable and teaching a lesson in The Enchanted Forest. King George does not want others to think less of him by knowing that he is afraid and he tries to hide his fear. However, when the time comes, King George must choose what to do - either face his fear or perhaps lose his wife and daughter forever.

This is a great lesson for children to learn to be honest with themselves and also work toward facing their fears and overcoming them. Some words are complex and may need to be explained to children, but overall it is a story that will hold a child’s attention and be one that they will think about and apply to their own lives.
